There is a Winter Storm Warning in effect for Western Duval County, with freezing rain expected from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. The City of Jacksonville's Emergency Preparedness Division is actively monitoring the weather and will provide additional information on January 21.
In response to the cold weather, the City of Jacksonville has announced that warming centers will be open through 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 25. Overnight accommodations are available at The Legends Center from Monday to Friday between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. Daytime services are provided at the Jacksonville Public Main Library on Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and all COJ Libraries and Community Centers during normal business hours from Tuesday to Friday.
Residents are encouraged to complete their winter storm preparations, especially those living in the Northwest and West side of Duval County. Important steps include staying informed through trusted sources, checking emergency supply kits, signing up for ALERTJAX notifications, having a family safety plan, preparing homes and vehicles for cold conditions, and driving carefully due to potential icy roads.
The city also emphasizes fire safety due to increased use of heating equipment during dangerously cold temperatures. Space heaters, fireplaces, and appliances should be used with caution.
Local non-profit partners are providing shelter services for the homeless population. Facilities such as City Rescue Mission, Mission House's Cold Night Shelter at Community Presbyterian Church, Sulzbacher Center locations for men and women/children, and Trinity Rescue Mission offer shelter options when temperatures drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
