Joe Biden’s approach to the Russian invasion of Ukraine has drawn criticism, particularly from Senator Rick Scott, a Republican from Florida. Scott argues that Biden's management of the conflict did not provide Ukraine sufficient resources to defeat Russia. Scott claims Biden’s actions condemned Ukraine to ongoing warfare and criticized him for providing funds that, in his view, were misallocated, rather than securing European allies' contributions.

President Trump, upon taking office, has reportedly sought to change this trajectory. Trump, supported by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other administration officials, is focused on aiding Ukraine to victory. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have expressed their support for Trump's efforts to broker peace.

A major hurdle remains with Russia. Trump has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of stalling and attaching unfair conditions to peace deals. Putin is alleged to have violated previous ceasefire agreements.

Trump has taken a dual approach in dealing with Moscow: maintaining sanctions and providing arms to Ukraine while also proposing better future relations, conditional on the end of the war. The U.S. under Trump aims to negotiate access to Ukraine’s resources and prepare to offer further military aid if necessary, urging European partners to contribute financially.

Rick Scott emphasizes the need for Putin to end the war and warns of increased sanctions should Russia continue its current path.

Rick Scott is Florida’s senior U.S. senator, serving on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a former governor of Florida.
