The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) may receive a new lease on life. U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Ben Cardin (D-MD), and their colleagues have introduced the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom Reauthorization Act of 2024. This bill aims to extend the authorization of USCIRF for two additional years, as its current authorization is set to expire on September 30, 2024.
Senator Rubio, a staunch advocate for religious freedom, expressed his support for the reauthorization. He emphasized the importance of USCIRF's work in protecting the freedom of religion around the world. Rubio stated, "USCIRF continues to lead vital efforts in support, and in defense of, our God-given right to freely live out one's faith." He further noted the ongoing violations and undermining of religious freedom by authoritarian nations. Rubio cited examples such as China's forced abortions and sterilization of Uyghur Muslims, the persecution of Catholics in Nicaragua, the repression of people of faith in Cuba, and the abhorrent sexual assault of Jewish women by Hamas terrorists.
Rubio's bill has garnered support from other senators as well. Senators Chris Coons (D-CT), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and James Lankford (R-OK) have joined Rubio and Cardin in their efforts to reauthorize USCIRF. In the House of Representatives, US Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Anna Eshoo (D-CA) have introduced a companion bill.
The USCIRF was created in 1998 by the International Religious Freedom Act, with a bipartisan mission to monitor and report on international religious freedom. Over the years, USCIRF has played a crucial role in raising awareness about religious persecution and advocating for the protection of religious minorities worldwide.
This is not the first time that Rubio has championed the reauthorization of USCIRF. In September 2022, Rubio's bill to reauthorize USCIRF became law, further solidifying the commission's mandate. The signing of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom Reauthorization Act into law was also celebrated by Rubio in September 2019 and October 2015.
As the United States continues its commitment to promoting religious freedom globally, the reauthorization of USCIRF will ensure that the commission can continue its vital work. By monitoring and reporting on religious freedom violations, USCIRF plays a vital role in holding nations accountable and advocating for the rights of individuals to freely practice their faith.
The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom Reauthorization Act of 2024 seeks to address the growing challenges to religious freedom around the world. With bipartisan support, this bill represents a united effort to protect and defend the God-given right to religious freedom.
