Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, along with their colleagues, have written a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, calling for an investigation into the pro-Hamas activists responsible for vandalizing the Los Angeles National Cemetery. The senators are urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) to prosecute these criminals for their disgraceful and illegal actions.
The senators express their outrage at the vandalism, which involved spray-painting the word "INTIFADA" and the phrase "FREE GAZA" on the cemetery grounds, as well as an upside-down red triangle, a symbol used by the Nazis in concentration camps. They describe the defacement as "disgusting, anti-American, and a testament as to how far pro-Hamas extremists will go to advocate on behalf of a Foreign Terrorist Organization."
Federal law explicitly prohibits individuals from damaging or destroying any structure or monument on public property commemorating the service of members of the armed forces. The senators argue that the actions of the pro-Hamas activists at the Los Angeles National Cemetery clearly violate this law.
In their letter, the senators emphasize the importance of honoring veterans and the sacrifices they have made for the country. They describe veterans as representing the best of America and commend their sacrifice, determination, and bravery. The senators also highlight that these veterans fought to protect the fundamental rights of all Americans, even those who lack the moral clarity to condemn terrorism.
The senators conclude their letter by calling for immediate consequences for the pro-Hamas activists responsible for the vandalism. They urge the DOJ to prosecute these individuals for their immoral and illegal tactics.
Joining Senators Scott and Rubio in signing the letter were Senators Kevin Cramer, Marsha Blackburn, Mike Braun, Dan Sullivan, John Hoeven, Jim Risch, Ted Budd, Bill Cassidy, Steve Daines, Deb Fischer, Mike Crapo, Lindsey Graham, Cindy Hyde-Smith, and Susan Collins.
The senators' letter serves as a strong message against those who seek to disrespect veterans and violate federal law. It highlights the need for swift action to hold the pro-Hamas activists accountable for their actions and ensure that the principles of justice are upheld.
