In recent years, the pro-life movement has experienced both significant victories and devastating defeats. While the pro-abortion regime has been overthrown and 21 states have enacted protections for the unborn, support for abortion has reached record levels. Meanwhile, the pro-life side has faced a perfect record of failure in state-level electoral initiatives.
Some have even suggested that being truly pro-life is a losing position and have urged Republicans to embrace a pro-abortion stance. Others argue that the fight should be left to the states, with the U.S. Congress staying out of the issue. However, if there is one reason to be pro-life, it is that an unborn child is a human being with the same rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness as any other American. Therefore, none of these positions are sustainable as they amount to an abandonment of our Declaration, Constitution, and basic human dignity.
Since the Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs vs. Jackson was leaked, Democrats have been projecting an apocalyptic vision of a supposedly pro-life future. Unfortunately, this narrative has resonated with voters and even some misinformed healthcare workers. The pro-life movement is facing a serious image problem with potentially devastating political consequences for the unborn, and time is running out to respond.
As pro-life citizens, civil society leaders, and lawmakers, we should consider three distinct yet related steps to reverse the current trend. The first step is to develop and loudly promote a compassionate and pro-family agenda.
"My legislation offers an example of how to support pregnant women and their children. It includes a series of pro-family and pro-life reforms, from expanding the child tax credit to guaranteeing paid parental leave and improving child support enforcement," says Marco Rubio, a pro-life advocate and lawmaker.
The second step to change the situation is to hold Democrats accountable for their extremism.
"If Democrats are going to be held accountable for their extremism, we will have to do the same. We should use every tool at our disposal to force Democrats to answer the question: 'What restrictions do you support for abortion?' If Democrats are forced to speak honestly, they will lose," Rubio emphasizes.
Finally, as individuals who identify as pro-life, we must remember that protecting human beings is at the core and purpose of our movement, and we cannot shy away from stating it.
"Our party believes in the dignity of the human person, the importance of family, and the inalienable right to life. There is no cause that aligns more perfectly with these beliefs and motivates our party's supporters more than the pro-life movement. We have a sacred duty to effectively defend the right to life," Rubio concludes.
It is clear that the pro-life movement is at a critical juncture, where the need for a winning strategy is paramount. By championing a compassionate and pro-family agenda, holding Democrats accountable for their extremism, and prioritizing the protection of human life, the pro-life movement can regain its strength and ensure a brighter future for the unborn.
