In a recent article published in Clarín, it is highlighted that Argentina's decision to stay out of the BRICS trade group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is commendable. The BRICS group was founded in 2009 by Vladimir Putin with the aim of challenging the United States' position as a global leader. Currently controlled by Beijing, the BRICS members accumulate foreign currency reserves and lend billions to developing countries, posing a challenge to the US and other Western nations.
Senator Marco Rubio praised Argentina's stance, stating, "If the current trends continue, it will become increasingly difficult for the US to prevent violence and international oppression through sanctions." Rubio emphasized the importance of both Republicans and Democrats supporting President Milei's decision and administration in resisting the influence of countries such as Russia, China, and Iran, as well as countering regional dictatorships like Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.
Rubio urged President Biden to work closely with Milei to restrict the influence of these nations and strengthen partnerships in the hemisphere. He stated, "Milei is taking the right steps to be an ally of the US. The Biden administration would do well to respond in the same manner because our allies in the region are few these days. In the coming months, President Biden must set aside his old prejudice against conservatives and take Argentina seriously as an international partner."
It is worth noting that Argentina's previous socialist leader, Alberto Fernández, sympathized with Moscow and Beijing and saw joining the BRICS as a "great opportunity." However, had Argentina made this decision, it would have been disastrous for the country, leaving it in the clutches of a foreign communist dictatorship. Additionally, it would have significantly weakened the international standing of the US, given the alignment with the second-largest economy in South America and the third-largest source of lithium in the world.
In conclusion, Argentina's refusal to join the BRICS trade group is seen as a positive move by Senator Marco Rubio. He calls on President Biden to take Argentina seriously as an international partner and work closely with President Milei to counter the influence of Russia, China, and other authoritarian regimes in the region. As alliances in the hemisphere are scarce, it is crucial for the US to recognize Argentina's efforts and strengthen partnerships in the face of global challenges.
