U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) recently spoke to the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, where he reaffirmed his support for Israel and raised concerns about the prevalence of antisemitism in schools and universities. In his address, Rubio highlighted the importance of education institutions in shaping good citizens and productive individuals, expressing his disappointment in how some of these institutions have deviated from their original purpose.
Rubio stated, "These institutions have totally forgotten why they exist. They are designed to educate, to teach, to prepare, to equip, so people can go out and be good citizens and productive in their lives. That is not what they’ve become… We are subsidizing, in our country, the most expensive indoctrination program in the world."
The senator emphasized the need to address the global situation and threats faced by Israel, specifically mentioning groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. He urged people to take the threats seriously, stating, "When a group that has weapons and fighters says that their goal is the destruction of the Jewish state, you should believe them."
Rubio also expressed concern about the response within the United States to recent events, particularly the justification of the violence against Israel by certain individuals in positions of influence. He pointed out that these individuals include those in charge of important companies and students at prestigious institutions. Rubio warned about the long-term implications, stating, "If you extend this out 10, 15, 20 years, these are the people who are going to be in charge of really important things."
The senator highlighted the need to address the underlying issues of antisemitism and indoctrination that have become more visible in recent times. He stated, "It has also been eye-opening to a lot of people about what’s been simmering under the surface for a very long time, unaddressed... Now it’s been revealed. All of a sudden, people are realizing what we have subsidized in this country is the wholesale effort to use our most important institutions [to indoctrinate]."
Rubio stressed the importance of remembering the purpose of government, which is to promote peace and the happiness of people. He argued that education institutions have forgotten their purpose and that strong families and communities are the foundation for a strong country. He advocated for school choice as a means to strengthen families and communities, stating, "That is the antidote to all of this."
In conclusion, Rubio called for a focus on addressing the issues at home, stating, "The answer to those problems lie in our homes and our families and our communities. The more those of us in government realize that and understand that our job is to support family and community, not replace it, the better off our country will be, now and in the years to come."
Rubio's address to the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America shed light on the need to confront antisemitism in schools and universities and emphasized the importance of strong families and communities in shaping a strong nation.
