Senator Rick Scott, along with other lawmakers, has introduced the Broadband Buildout Accountability Act. This legislation aims to enhance accountability and transparency regarding federal funds allocated for broadband expansion. The initiative comes in response to concerns that billions of dollars have been spent without connecting any Americans to high-speed internet over the past four years.

The bill is supported by Senators John Barrasso, Marsha Blackburn, John Curtis, Dan Sullivan, Roger Wicker, Todd Young, and Jerry Moran. Congressman August Pfluger is leading the effort in the House of Representatives.

Senator Rick Scott emphasized the need for transparency: “Americans deserve to know exactly how the government is spending their money and that it’s in their best interests.” He criticized the lack of progress despite a $42 billion grant intended for rural communities and urged support for the bill to ensure taxpayers see returns on their investments.

Senator Marsha Blackburn highlighted the importance of broadband access in rural areas like Tennessee and stressed that taxpayer money should be spent with accountability. Senator John Curtis pointed out that records concerning a significant broadband program remain inaccessible to the public and advocated for removing disclosure exemptions to prevent waste and mismanagement.

Senator Jerry Moran underscored that creating accountability allows stakeholders to understand distribution decisions. Senator Dan Sullivan noted that broadband investments could unlock opportunities in Alaska but require oversight to ensure funds are properly used.

Senator Roger Wicker stated that ensuring federal funds reach underserved areas promptly is crucial for connecting communities in Mississippi. Senator Todd Young added that transparency would help close the digital divide across America.

Congressman August Pfluger expressed concerns about fraud during previous administrations and stressed restoring trust through this legislation. He stated: “The Broadband Buildout Accountability Act will provide greater transparency within the BEAD process...and ensure that the $42 billion in taxpayer dollars in broadband investments are being properly used.”
