Today, a group of U.S. Senators, including Rick Scott, Marsha Blackburn, John Barrasso, and Ted Cruz, introduced the WHO is Accountable Act in Washington D.C. This legislative effort comes in response to former President Trump's executive order that removed the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO). The act aims to prevent the U.S. from rejoining the WHO until it implements transparent accountability reforms concerning its alleged alignment with Chinese Communist Party interests.
Congressman Jodey Arrington is leading similar legislation in the House of Representatives.
Senator Rick Scott stated his support for President Trump's decision to withdraw federal funds and U.S. membership from the WHO. He emphasized that "this is an organization that clearly doesn't care about American families," citing its cooperation with the Chinese Communist Party during the COVID-19 pandemic as evidence.
Senator Marsha Blackburn criticized the WHO's management of the pandemic and its financial relationship with China. She remarked on the necessity of supporting actions that hold the WHO accountable by setting conditions for any future reentry into the organization.
Senator John Barrasso echoed these sentiments, highlighting concerns over transparency and independence at the WHO. He asserted that taxpayer money should not be used to support an organization without significant reforms to prevent another inadequate pandemic response.
