The City of Jacksonville has issued heating safety tips to residents amid ongoing cold weather conditions. According to Andre Ayoub, Chief of the City of Jacksonville Emergency Preparedness Division, winter is a critical time for home fires. "Taking a few simple precautions can reduce fire risks, protect your loved ones, and keep your home safe during this cold weather," Ayoub emphasized.
Residents are advised to use space heaters with caution by maintaining a three-foot clearance from flammable materials and plugging them directly into outlets rather than using extension cords or power strips. Fireplace users should have chimneys inspected annually and ensure fires are fully extinguished before leaving them unattended.
Appliances should only be used for their intended purposes to avoid fire and carbon monoxide hazards. Smoke alarms must be operational on every floor, with monthly tests and regular battery replacements. A fire escape plan should also be in place, ensuring everyone knows two ways out of each room.
Carbon monoxide dangers are highlighted with recommendations to install detectors at home and refrain from using outdoor appliances indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide buildup.
The city has opened its Warming Center at the Legends Center on Soutel Drive as part of its Warming Center Contingency Plan, activated when temperatures drop to 27 degrees or below. The center will operate overnight for residents lacking adequate heat.
Additional shelters provided by non-profit partners include the City Rescue Mission, Mission House at St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal Parish Hall, Sulzbacher Center locations for men and women with children, and Trinity Rescue Mission.
