The Emergency Preparedness Division has initiated the Warming Center Contingency Plan due to the forecasted cold weather. The plan is activated when temperatures drop to 27 degrees or below, prompting the City of Jacksonville to open its Warming Center overnight for residents lacking adequate heating.
The Legends Center at 5130 Soutel Drive in Jacksonville will serve as the designated warming site from 9 p.m. on January 6, 2025, until 9 a.m. on January 7, 2025. Vulnerable individuals will be transported by JTA buses to the center, which will be staffed and equipped with water.
Residents planning to use the Warming Center are advised to bring personal items such as air mattresses, blankets, pillows, snacks, medication, games, toys, books, and hygiene products. Furthermore, all COJ Libraries and Community Centers in Duval County will function as warming centers during their regular business hours.
Non-profit partners are also providing additional shelter services for the homeless community during this cold spell. Facilities offering these services include:
- City Rescue Mission at 234 W. State Street
- Mission House at 465 11th Ave. N., with overnight operations at St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal – Parish Hall located at 1150 5th Street N.
- Sulzbacher Center with locations for men at 611 East Adams St., and for women and children at 5455 Springfield Blvd.
- Trinity Rescue Mission at 622 W. Union Street
