Today, Senator Rick Scott announced the Senate's approval of a resolution recognizing the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola. This attack occurred on December 6, 2019, when a Saudi military trainee killed three U.S. Navy sailors and injured others. Senators Marco Rubio, Katie Britt, Tommy Tuberville, Jon Ossoff, and Raphael Warnock co-sponsored this resolution.
In response to the 2019 attack, Senator Scott worked to incorporate the Secure U.S. Bases Act into the National Defense Authorization Act in 2020. This legislation aims to enhance foreign military student training programs by requiring thorough vetting processes for foreign students entering the United States. The law also mandates that foreign students adhere to rules set by U.S. Base Commanders and strengthens security measures at military installations.
Senator Rick Scott remarked, "Today, on the fifth anniversary of the tragic shooting at NAS Pensacola that senselessly took the lives of three brave Americans—Joshua Kaleb Watson, Mohammed Haitham and Cameron Walters—we honor their service and life dedicated to serving and protecting our country." He emphasized his commitment to ensuring safety at military bases to prevent future tragedies.
Senator Tommy Tuberville added his sentiments regarding one of the victims: “Ensign Joshua Kaleb Watson is a hero who showed incredible courage in the face of terrorism on Dec. 6, 2019. His bravery and quick action saved countless lives on a tragic day for our nation."
The resolution serves as a reminder of those who lost their lives in this act of terror and honors their memory.
