The City of Jacksonville has announced its plan for warming centers in response to cold weather conditions. The centers will be activated based on recommendations from the National Weather Service (NWS) Jacksonville. According to the guidelines, the centers will open when temperatures are forecasted to drop to 27°F or below for two hours or more within the next 12 hours. Additionally, any issuance of a Hard Freeze Watch or Warning, Cold Weather Advisory, or Extreme Cold Watch or Warning by NWS will prompt activation.
As of December 4, 2024, no countywide Cold Weather Emergency has been declared, and the warming centers remain closed. However, should conditions meet the criteria during weekdays from Monday to Saturday, these centers will operate at all COJ Public Libraries and Community Centers during regular business hours. On Sundays and holidays, facilities such as the Main Library and Legends Center will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For overnight needs throughout the week, Legends Center's operating hours will depend on NWS forecasts.
The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is set to provide free transportation to these centers on days designated as Cold Weather Emergencies. Residents using these services are advised to bring personal items like bedding, snacks, medications, games, hygiene products, and comfort items.
The city is collaborating with non-profit shelter partners to ensure adequate resources for the homeless population. Currently, shelters report no unmet needs or turned away individuals due to cold weather. Facilities such as City Rescue Mission and Sulzbacher have increased their overnight capacities until temperatures rise above 40 degrees.
Additionally, Trinity Rescue Mission is prepared to expand bed capacity if necessary. Mission House plans to host a shelter through partnering churches if temperatures fall below 39°F.
Jacksonville's JFRD PATH team is actively assessing the needs of the homeless community while providing support where possible. The Extreme Cold Task Force continues monitoring weather conditions closely in collaboration with community organizations and faith-based partners.
