WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ahead of the pro-democracy demonstrations scheduled for tomorrow in Venezuela, Senator Rick Scott issued a statement warning dictator Nicolás Maduro not to harm or detain María Corina Machado and urging him to commit to a peaceful transition of power to President-elect Edmundo González. Tomorrow marks one month since González defeated Maduro at the polls, but the Biden-Harris administration still refuses to recognize him as president-elect and has yet to fully align with the people of Venezuela.
Senator Rick Scott stated: “The dictator Nicolás Maduro is becoming desperate as his power wanes, and his threats against María Corina Machado must be taken seriously. Maduro needs to know this: I am doing everything within my power as a United States senator to pursue Maduro and his narco-regime with the full force of the U.S. government. If he harms or arrests María Corina Machado or President-elect Edmundo González, there will be severe consequences. The weak appeasement by the Biden-Harris administration towards the evil regimes of Cuba and Venezuela has allowed Maduro to maintain his grip on power for far too long. It is imperative for U.S. national security, Western Hemisphere stability, and the fight for democracy in Venezuela that the Biden-Harris administration reimpose sanctions, recognize Edmundo González as president-elect, and rally global efforts to end Maduro's tyrannical regime now.”
