On August 26, 2024, Senator Rick Scott, along with Senator Marco Rubio and Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart, María Elvira Salazar, Michael Waltz, Neal Dunn, Byron Donalds, and Carlos Gimenez, submitted a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee endorsing Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for the Nobel Peace Prize. The lawmakers highlighted Machado’s significant efforts in advocating for democratic governance in Venezuela amidst ongoing threats.
The letter emphasized Machado's role in inspiring the Venezuelan populace to elect President-Elect Edmundo González while contrasting her peaceful leadership with the oppressive actions of the Chávez-Maduro regime. "Her tireless efforts to advocate for free and fair elections and to bring attention to the human rights abuses occurring under the current regime embody the very principles that the Nobel Peace Prize seeks to honor," stated the members.
Machado's resilience and commitment were noted despite facing severe personal threats. Her leadership has been pivotal in garnering both domestic and international support for resolving electoral fraud peacefully. The legislators stressed that her work benefits not only Venezuela but also impacts regional stability positively.
The letter further criticized Maduro's regime for its human rights violations which have led millions of Venezuelans to flee their country. "The peace of the region has been greatly disturbed by Maduro’s welcoming of some of the world’s worst actors," they wrote.
In conclusion, they asserted that Machado's non-violent resistance and dedication to democracy make her an exemplary candidate for this prestigious award. They expressed hope that she would receive recognition from the Nobel Committee for her contributions.
