The City of Jacksonville is gearing up for its 4th annual Emancipation Celebration at James Weldon Johnson Park, set to take place on May 20, 2024. Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman expressed the city's recognition of the historical significance of Emancipation Day, stating, “Emancipation was proclaimed in Florida on May 20, 1865 and the City of Jacksonville recognizes the significance that has made for our community. We’re excited and humbled to support James Weldon Johnson Park as we celebrate this day together with a fun festival for the community.”
This year's festival will be headlined by Katz Downstairs, a Soul & R&B Vibe from Jacksonville, with Councilman Rahman Johnson hosting the event. Other local performers such as Mr. Al Pete, Taryn “Love Reigns” Warwood, and Mal Jones will also grace the stage. The celebration will feature local African American food trucks, vendors, and fun activities for children, running from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Councilwoman Pittman highlighted the festival's importance, stating, “As a community, we are recognizing the past wrongs and injustices with a celebration of unity with a profound purpose. As we continue to celebrate as a community, we still have work to do together.”
Emancipation Day in Florida holds historical significance, being proclaimed in Tallahassee on May 20, 1865, effectively ending slavery in the state. This day marks the celebration of freedom for many in Florida, distinct from the Juneteenth celebrations in other parts of the country.
