Senator Rick Scott has issued a statement in response to President Joe Biden's decision to remove the Cuban regime from the U.S. list of nations that are not cooperative with counterterrorism efforts. This move by the Biden administration marks a reversal of Cuba’s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, which was made under the Trump administration in January 2021.

Previously, Senator Scott introduced the Fighting Oppression until the Reign of Castro Ends (FORCE) Act to prevent President Biden from normalizing relations with Cuba unless freedom and democracy are restored on the island. He is also advocating for his Denying Earnings to the Military Oligarchy in Cuba and Restricting Activities of the Cuban Intelligence Apparatus (DEMOCRACIA) Act. This legislation would authorize the president to use all necessary means to ensure internet access on the island and hold the Cuban regime accountable through severe sanctions and unprecedented financial pressure.

Senator Scott stated, “Every time President Biden appeases the illegitimate, communist Cuban regime, he helps destabilize the Western Hemisphere, supports terrorism and does a huge favor for America’s enemies in Russia, Iran and Communist China." He further criticized Biden's approach towards dealing with illegal immigration issues with Mexico and warned about potential threats to national security due to increased border infiltration.

The FORCE Act proposed by Senator Scott prevents Cuba from being removed from the State Sponsor of Terrorism List until they meet certain conditions such as releasing all political prisoners, transitioning away from Castro's regime, and committing to holding free and fair elections.

The DEMOCRACIA Act authorizes sanctions against any foreign person or entity engaging in activities supporting international terrorism or human rights abuses with Cuba's defense sector. It also provides provisions for imposing sanctions related to human rights abuse and corruption in Cuba.

Senator Scott has been vocal about his condemnation of Cuba's oppressive regime since demonstrations began on July 11, 2021. He has called for action from both domestic administration and international leaders to support the Cuban people.
