U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) emphasized the importance of building a strong relationship with leaders in the Western Hemisphere in a recent article published in the National Interest. Rubio highlighted the willingness of leaders such as Luis Abinader in the Dominican Republic, Dina Boluarte in Peru, Irfaan Ali in Guyana, and Rodrigo Chaves in Costa Rica to strengthen their partnerships with the United States.
Rubio acknowledged the significance of these leaders who collectively govern more than 120 million people and control over $1 trillion in GDP. He stressed the need to reciprocate their willingness to collaborate, recognizing that their success ultimately contributes to the success of the United States.
The Senator also outlined the benefits of fostering a safer hemisphere, citing the importance of reducing transnational crime and illegal mass migration. To address these issues, Rubio introduced the bipartisan Western Hemisphere Security Strategy Act and the bipartisan Caribbean Basin Security Initiative Authorization Act.
In addition to security concerns, Rubio highlighted the economic advantages of collaborating with friendly nations in the region. He emphasized the potential for trade partnerships and nearshoring opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean, which are rich in critical natural resources.
Rubio also called for a shift away from exporting controversial progressive social values and advocated for greater support for neighbors willing to work with the U.S. rather than China. He underscored the need for increased attention from U.S. policymakers to ensure security, prosperity, and freedom prevail in the Western Hemisphere.
