U.S. Senator Marco Rubio recently appeared on State of the Union with Jake Tapper to discuss Iran’s recent attack on Israel and the implications of the ongoing situation. Rubio provided insights on Iran's motives, Israel's response, passing supplemental funding, and the broader implications for the region.
Rubio emphasized Iran's long-standing goal of making Israel "an unlivable place" through various means. He highlighted that while Iran may not have succeeded in physical attacks, the economic and social impact on Israel remains significant. Rubio stated, "Iran's goal has always been the same, and that is to make Israel an unlivable place."
Regarding Israel's response to the attack, Rubio refrained from dictating Israel's actions, acknowledging their history of facing threats to their existence and their doctrine of responding to attacks with strength. He mentioned, "I’m not going to tell Israel what to do, because I’m not the one that was attacked by 300 rockets and missiles and drones."
Rubio also addressed the need for passing supplemental funding for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, emphasizing the importance of supporting Israel in a bipartisan manner. He noted, "When it comes to Israel, this is something that has long enjoyed strong bipartisan support."
Regarding Israel's recent strike near the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Rubio clarified the target as an annex building occupied by IRCG agents who were aiding groups like Hezbollah in their attacks on Israel. He emphasized the strategic importance of targeting such individuals.
Lastly, Rubio expressed his support for defending American troops in the region while also highlighting the need for clarity in the United States' response to Iran's actions. He stated, "I support defending American troops in the region. We have people stationed in the region in multiple countries, and we sent them there."
Rubio's insights shed light on the complex dynamics at play in the region and the importance of strategic responses to safeguard the interests of both Israel and the United States in the face of escalating tensions.
