U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) have introduced a resolution to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act and reaffirm the United States' commitment to Taiwan's democracy. Senator Rubio emphasized this commitment, stating, “As we commemorate 45 years since the historic enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act, the United States reaffirms its support to our democratic ally in the Indo-Pacific region. May this cornerstone of our bilateral relations remain strong as Taiwan confronts constant threats from Communist China.”

Senator Merkley also highlighted the importance of the U.S.-Taiwan relationship, noting, “The United States and Taiwan share many bedrock values — including a commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Strong partnerships like the United States’ with Taiwan are crucial to advancing our interests around the globe. This bipartisan, bicameral resolution honors our unwavering commitment to a key democratic ally.”

The resolution introduced by Rubio and Merkley in the Senate has a companion resolution in the House, introduced by U.S. Representatives Ami Bera (D-CA), Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL), Gerry Conolly (D-VA), and Andy Barr (R-KY).

The Taiwan Relations Act was enacted to ensure the United States continues to support Taiwan's sovereignty and security, especially in the face of increasing aggression from the People’s Republic of China. In recent years, China has escalated its efforts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty through economic, military, and political coercion.

This latest resolution is part of a series of legislative efforts aimed at strengthening U.S.-Taiwan relations and supporting Taiwan in the face of growing challenges. Previous initiatives led by Senator Rubio include bills to increase deterrence in the Taiwan Strait, formulate a U.S. response to a potential Taiwan invasion, and rename Taiwan’s de facto diplomatic outpost.

The bipartisan nature of these efforts underscores the importance of the U.S.-Taiwan relationship and the shared values that underpin the partnership between the two nations.
