WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Rick Scott paid tribute to Cuban freedom fighter Oswaldo Payá on what would have been his birthday, expressing solidarity with the people of Cuba in their struggle for liberty and democracy.
In a statement, Senator Scott remarked, "Today, as we continue our fight for a new day of freedom in Cuba, we join Rosa Maria Payá and the freedom-loving people of Cuba in honoring and remembering the legacy of Oswaldo Payá on his birthday."
Scott highlighted the tragic fate of Payá and his comrade Harold Cepero Escalante, stating, "Oswaldo, and his fellow freedom fighter Harold Cepero Escalante, were murdered by the Castro regime because they believed in freedom and stood up against tyranny."
The Senator reiterated the United States' commitment to standing against the oppressive actions of the Cuban government, declaring, "Today, we once again remind the Castro and Díaz-Canel regime that the United States will never forget the oppression and human rights atrocities that the illegitimate Cuban dictatorship has committed against its people."
Furthermore, Scott emphasized the need for the Biden administration to take a firm stance against the Cuban regime, asserting, "We will never stop demanding that the Biden administration condemn the atrocities of the illegitimate communist Cuban regime by ending the appeasement and finally treating Raúl Castro and Miguel Díaz-Canel like the murderous thugs they are."
In closing, Senator Scott honored Oswaldo Payá's unwavering dedication to the cause of freedom in Cuba, pledging, "Oswaldo Payá dedicated his life to standing against Castro's ruthless regime and fighting for freedom and democracy in Cuba. I will not stop fighting until there is a new day of freedom in Cuba."
