Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Vice Chairman Marco Rubio (R-FL) has expressed his deep concern and condemnation following the death of Russian opposition leader and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny in a Russian prison. Rubio stated, “Navalny’s tragic death at the hands of the Putin bloodthirsty regime is a stark reminder that Putin and his thugs will stop at nothing to silence dissent or those who might expose the level of corruption in the Kremlin."

Rubio highlighted the importance of supporting those who speak out against authoritarianism in Russia, emphasizing the need to continue to stand with brave individuals like Navalny. He also called for the release of political prisoners such as Vladimir Kara-Murza, stressing the ongoing struggle for freedom and democracy in the country.

The Senator's statement comes in the wake of Navalny's passing, which marks the culmination of a series of events that began with his poisoning in 2020. Despite returning to his homeland and being detained by The Kremlin, Navalny remained a symbol of resistance against the Russian government's oppressive tactics.

Rubio's previous actions regarding Russia include urging the President to hold Putin accountable for human rights violations against Ukrainians, reintroducing legislation targeting Russian officials involved in Navalny's poisoning, advocating for measures to deter Russian cyberattacks, and calling out tech giants like Google and Apple for collaborating with Putin to manipulate Russian elections.

The death of Alexei Navalny serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by those who challenge the Putin regime in Russia. Rubio's statement underscores the importance of supporting democratic values and human rights in the face of oppression and political persecution.
