U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) recently appeared on State of the Union with Jake Tapper to address several pressing issues, including America's border crisis, support for U.S. allies, and even his prediction for the Super Bowl. During the interview, Rubio shared his thoughts on these topics and provided insight into his stance on various matters.
Rubio began by discussing the future of NATO, highlighting the fact that previous American presidents have expressed concerns about other countries in NATO not doing enough. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the alliance, stating, "There has to be an alliance. It’s not ‘America’s defense,’ with a bunch of small junior partners. Some of these are big countries with big economies. Many of them are doing more."
The conversation then shifted to additional U.S. support for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Rubio argued that while aiding these countries is vital, America's priority should be strengthening itself first. He stated, "If America is not strong, we can't help any of our allies. Americans have to be our priority, and then we can help our allies."
Addressing the border crisis, Rubio expressed concerns about the number of individuals who have been released into the country illegally. He noted, "This is a huge problem, and it has to be addressed." Rubio called for securing the U.S. border before providing aid to other nations, stating, "Before we do these things, we have to make America and Americans a priority again."
Rubio also criticized a Senate border "deal" that he believes would worsen the migration crisis. He expressed concerns about the bill's provisions, such as creating an asylum corps that could grant immediate work permits and asylum to individuals crossing the border. Rubio argued that these measures would serve as magnets for more people to enter the country illegally.
Responding to claims that the border "deal" would shut down the border, Rubio clarified that it provides the ability to do so but also allows for the president to suspend the emergency if it is not in the national interest. He also highlighted loopholes in the parole program that the current administration has used to release individuals into the country.
Rubio concluded the interview on a lighter note, discussing his Super Bowl pick. He expressed his desire for the San Francisco 49ers to win, in part to dispel conspiracy theories about Taylor Swift. However, he acknowledged that the Kansas City Chiefs were likely to emerge victorious.
