WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Rick Scott has called on President Joe Biden to reassess the United States' relationship with Colombia in light of Colombian President Gustavo Petro's recent controversial remarks. In a letter to President Biden, Senator Scott expressed concern over Petro's anti-Israel and anti-Semitic statements following the brutal attacks on Israel by Iran-backed Hamas terrorists.

The attacks, which occurred on October 7th, claimed the lives of over 1,400 people in Israel, including 33 Americans. Additionally, Hamas continues to hold more than 200 people hostage, including numerous Americans. Senator Scott emphasized the need for a thorough examination of the U.S.-Colombia relationship, given Petro's track record of opposing U.S. interests and his recent comments blaming Israel for the atrocities committed by Hamas.

One of Petro's initial actions as president was to restore diplomatic relations with the Maduro regime in Venezuela, a regime known for its alliances with U.S. adversaries such as Cuba, Russia, Communist China, and Iranian proxies. Senator Scott highlighted Petro's alignment with Communist China and his support for narco-guerilla groups like the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the illegitimate Communist Cuban regime.

Of particular concern is Petro's sympathy for Iran-backed terrorist groups, some of whom reside in Venezuela under the protection of the Maduro regime. There are credible allegations that Hezbollah, a terrorist organization, is exploiting Venezuela's passport and visa loophole to infiltrate Colombia. Iran's influence in South America poses a clear and present danger to the United States, and Senator Scott emphasized the need for Colombia, a long-standing ally, to not take the side of these terrorist groups.

Senator Scott raised the alarm regarding Petro's background as a former member of the M-19 guerilla movement and expressed concern about his ability to govern as a democratic ally of the United States. He called on the Biden administration to closely scrutinize all forms of U.S. aid to Colombia and ensure that it aligns with U.S. interests. It is crucial for the United States to make it clear that allies must not engage in attacks on Israel or support terrorists, nor should they facilitate their activities in the region.

The senator stressed the importance of learning from past mistakes, citing the example of the Maduro regime in Venezuela. Ignoring warnings about such behaviors can lead to the establishment of footholds for U.S. adversaries in Latin America. It is imperative to ensure that Colombia and all other allies understand the consequences of aligning with terrorists and regimes that seek to undermine the American way of life.

As the United States' largest trading and security partner in Latin America, Colombia holds a significant role in the region. Senator Scott's call for a reevaluation of the U.S.-Colombian relationship underscores the need to address concerns and protect U.S. interests. The Biden administration must take these concerns seriously and take appropriate action to safeguard the bond between the two nations.
