Today in Washington, D.C., Senator Rick Scott introduced the Coast Guard Improvement Act aimed at establishing a Secretary of the Coast Guard. This new position is designed to oversee Coast Guard operations, reporting directly to the Secretary of Homeland Security. The primary goal is to improve strategic oversight, enhance the adaption of the U.S. Coast Guard to evolving missions, and bolster the security of U.S. waters while supporting the nation's defense.

Senator Scott emphasized the importance of this position, stating, “The establishment of a Secretary of the Coast Guard is an important step in ensuring our nation’s maritime security is led with the strength and efficiency it deserves to ensure it can fulfill its mission and adapt to any challenges." He further emphasized the importance of collaboration with President Trump, military leaders, and the Department of Homeland Security.

Senator Shelley Moore Capito, who cosponsors the bill, commented on the role of the Coast Guard, saying, “The men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard—including those at our four important facilities in West Virginia–work incredibly hard and on many different fronts to keep Americans safe and help ensure our nation is secure." She highlighted that creating a Secretary position would streamline the Coast Guard's operations similar to other military branches.

The proposed changes aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the U.S. Coast Guard in fulfilling its duties and responsibilities.
