Riverside High School celebrates installation of new artificial turf field

Alumni, staff, students, and district leadership recently celebrated the unveiling of Riverside High School’s new artificial turf field.

The Generals are the first Duval County Public School to have their field upgraded to an AstroTurf playing surface.

The installation project has been in the works for several years. The new field comes with great excitement for the entire school community as the grounds are utilized by multiple sports and extracurricular activities including physical education classes, cheerleader practice, and marching band.

“Having the new AstroTurf field has reenergized the student athletes at Riverside High School,” said Timothy Feagins, Principal of the school.  “Knowing we are the first DCPS school to have this AstroTurf field gives our students a new identity. This is one example of many that shows how the leadership of DCPS will continually do everything in its power to provide the best environment for our students to thrive.”

“The new AstroTurf field at Riverside High School was a much-needed project and is a tremendous enhancement to the athletic facility,” said Tammie Talley, Director of Athletics for Duval County Public Schools. “This new high-quality playing surface is state-of-the-art, durable and safe for our student athletes.”

The facilitation of this project was not funded by the half-penny sales tax or the recent 1-mil referendum.  However, this type of athletic upgrade is representative of what high schools will receive in the future when the 1- mil goes into effect.

“The turf field will not only improve the General’s performance but amplify the overall experience of all players and teams,” said Talley. “We are excited not only for Riverside High, but for all Duval County Public Schools, as every high school will be getting a new turf field.”
