UNF professor awarded a McNight Junior Faculty Fellowship award

28

Dr. Felicia Bevel, a University of North Florida assistant professor of history, was recently awarded a Junior Faculty Fellowship by the Florida Education Fund (FEF). The Junior Faculty Fellowship Program promotes excellence in teaching and research by underrepresented minorities and women.

Bevel, an interdisciplinary cultural historian with a focus on African American history and American culture abroad, is awarded a one-year sabbatical beginning this August with full salary and benefits that will allow her to engage in research and training projects that will advance her education and skillset.

Bevel will use the time to complete two journal articles related to her current book manuscript, “Exporting Dixie: Race, Nation, and Nostalgia in the Age of Empire” and one journal article related to her proposed second book project on the intersection of the American South and the American West in popular culture.

Bevel teaches courses at UNF on the civil rights movement and the Black Pacific and serves on the advisory boards of the Digital Humanities Institute and Africana Studies program. She holds a doctorate in American studies from Brown University and a bachelors in sociology with a concentration in African American studies from Columbia University.

Since 1984, the FEF has awarded over 230 Junior Faculty Fellowships to historically underrepresented minorities and women to advance faculty diversity within Florida colleges/universities and proudly reports that a majority of the fellows awarded have either received tenure/promotion or completed a doctoral degree.
