University of North Florida issued the following announcement on Sept. 21.
The University of North Florida’s virtual webinar and discussion series “The Justice Sessions” returns for the fall 2021 semester with a new list of topics and discussions.
Developed by an interdisciplinary group of University departments, the series brings together speakers from UNF and the local community to discuss Jacksonville’s history of racial and civil rights struggles. Each session aims to help create a better understanding of where we came from and how we can move forward united into the future.
The webinars scheduled for the fall semester are as follows:
Community Learning Exchange with Chris Janson and Rudy Jamison
Wednesday, Sept. 22, noon to 1 p.m.
UNF Center for Urban Education and Policy professors will present an interactive conversation on race in our local communities.
Poetry of the Land: Bringing Hip Hop and Agriculture Together
Thursday, Oct. 28, noon to 1 p.m.
Dr. Constanza López, UNF associate professor, speaks with “El Aka,” a community leader from Comuna 13, Medellín, Colombia. This presentation will discuss the history of Comuna 13, el Aka’s experience growing up in a place devastated by armed conflict, his fight to obtain a voice through art and hip hop, the link between hip hop and agriculture, and El Aka’s vision of community and governance.
An Evening with Deesha Philyaw
Tuesday, Nov. 9, 7 p.m.
Location: Lazzara Performance Hall
Deesha Pilyaw, fiction writer and essayist, will discuss race, gender, parenting and culture.
Preserving Zora’s Eatonville: A Conversation with N.Y. Nathiri
Wednesday, Dec. 8, Noon to 1 p.m.
N.Y. Nathiri, executive director of The Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community, will discuss her extensive work spearheading efforts to preserve the historic town of Eatonville, Florida, including her establishment of the annual Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities.
