Senator Rick Scott has teamed up with Senator Ted Cruz to introduce the Protecting Military Installations and Ranges Act. This proposed legislation aims to safeguard Department of Defense installations and training areas from foreign entities acting on behalf of Russia, China, Iran, or North Korea. The bill is also backed by Senators Ted Budd, Katie Britt, Tommy Tuberville, Markwayne Mullin, and Tom Cotton.

Senator Rick Scott stated, "The federal government has a duty to protect the American people and our military bases from espionage and terrorist attacks." He emphasized the importance of preventing known adversaries from owning land near military bases.

Senator Ted Cruz highlighted that foreign adversaries exploit loopholes to acquire land close to military sites. He expressed pride in introducing the legislation aimed at blocking such acquisitions and urged the Senate for swift action.

Senator Ted Budd pointed out that land purchases by the Chinese Communist Party near U.S. military facilities pose a direct threat to national security. He thanked Senator Cruz for leading this legislative effort.

Senator Katie Britt noted that adversaries globally seek opportunities to undermine the United States through investments. She stressed that expanding CFIUS jurisdiction is crucial for protecting national security assets in Alabama.

Senator Tommy Tuberville expressed concern about adversaries claiming land near vital military installations. He underscored Alabama's significance with its five key installations and called for immediate action by CFIUS.

Senator Markwayne Mullin linked concerns over border security with potential threats at military installations. He advocated for legislation as part of efforts to secure borders and protect against criminal elements threatening national security.

Finally, Senator Tom Cotton remarked on America's adversaries having no business purchasing land in proximity to military bases. He deemed this legislation essential for addressing gaps in national security measures.

The act proposes expanding CFIUS jurisdiction over real estate investments within 100 miles of a military installation or 50 miles of certain operational areas if linked to entities from China, Russia, Iran, or North Korea. It would prevent DOD and DOT from finalizing related project determinations until committee reviews are complete.
