In Washington, D.C., Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio have announced a legislative proposal to allocate $20 billion to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Disaster Relief Fund (DRF). This initiative aims to support states affected by Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton. The DRF is crucial for aiding individuals, households, and state entities in recovering from natural disasters but is reportedly running low on resources.

WFSU journalist Adrian Andrews highlighted this development, quoting Senator Scott: “Unfortunately, I am already hearing from local officials and families in Florida that are frustrated by the fact that these disasters have stretched FEMA’s current resources too thin. That is unacceptable.” Senator Scott stressed the urgency of replenishing funds during his visit to St. Lucie County.

Senator Rubio also expressed concerns about the fund's depletion. He stated, “While assessments of the full extent of these storms are underway, the DRF cannot be allowed to be depleted.”

As part of preparation efforts for Hurricane Milton, Senator Scott has engaged with various local leaders across Florida counties including St. Lucie and Sarasota. He also met with President Joe Biden and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell to discuss ongoing recovery operations.
