Senator Rick Scott visited Anna Maria Island in Manatee County to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Helene and receive a briefing from local emergency management officials. Sheriff Rick Wells, Holmes Beach Mayor Judy Titsworth, and Holmes Beach Police Chief William Tokajer provided updates on the response and recovery efforts.
Senator Scott has been in contact with federal officials, local leaders, law enforcement, and emergency management teams across the state to ensure that resources are available for those affected by the storm. He expressed his concern for those impacted by the hurricane: "My heart goes out to folks impacted by this monstrous storm. Anna Maria Island and a majority of the coastal communities in Manatee County were devastated by this storm and it is heartbreaking to see so many homes and businesses with significant damage."
He praised the efforts of law enforcement, National Guard, emergency management officials, and first responders: "I’m grateful for the law enforcement, National Guard, emergency management officials and first responders for their work here on the ground."
Senator Scott emphasized Florida's resilience: "Florida is resilient, and while so many families are facing unimaginable loss, I will stand alongside them every step of the way as they recover." He urged residents to follow local authorities' directions as recovery efforts continue.
Throughout the week, Senator Scott has been in regular communication with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and FEMA. He received briefings from officials in various counties before Helene's landfall and urged Floridians to heed warnings and evacuate if necessary.
On Monday, Senator Scott along with Senator Marco Rubio sent a letter to President Joe Biden requesting an emergency declaration for Florida. This request was approved on Tuesday afternoon.
Senator Scott encourages Floridians to visit his website or resources from the Florida Division of Emergency Management for information on Hurricane Helene response and recovery.
