In response to recent assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump, the Senate has unanimously passed Senator Rick Scott’s Enhanced Presidential Security Act. The legislation, which was spearheaded in the House by Representatives Mike Lawler and Ritchie Torres, had previously cleared the House with a unanimous 405-0 vote. This act aims to elevate the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) protection for presidential and vice-presidential nominees to match the level currently provided to sitting presidents and vice presidents. The bill now awaits President Joe Biden's signature.

Senator Rick Scott emphasized the urgency of this measure: “Over the course of just 65 days, two deranged individuals have tried to kill President Donald Trump, and one was able to shoot him in the head. It is unthinkable that this could happen in America today, and it demands the immediate action of Congress.” He expressed pride in gaining full Senate support for the act, highlighting that enhanced protective services are necessary given recent events.

Scott detailed two incidents involving assassination attempts on Trump. In Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump survived a gunshot wound to his head while Fire Chief Corey Comperatore was killed and others were injured. Another attempt occurred in Florida where Trump's Secret Service detail thwarted an attack while he was golfing.

“These events have reminded the nation of the danger surrounding President Trump and the need to make sure he, his family, and those around him are safe,” Scott said.

The bill also underscores bipartisan support for protecting all presidential nominees irrespective of party affiliation. "The safety and security of those seeking to lead our nation should never be in jeopardy," Scott added.

With its passage through both chambers of Congress without opposition, Scott stressed that this move reflects a unified stance against threats targeting democratic processes. “Passing the Enhanced Presidential Security Act today with the unanimous consent of the Senate sends an important message to the American people and the world that we will not ignore these threats,” he concluded.
