The independently verified results of the recent presidential elections in Venezuela indicate that Edmundo González Urrutia is the legitimately elected president. However, Nicolás Maduro continues to maintain his control over the country.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued a statement following what he described as questionable support from the Biden-Harris Administration for the Venezuelan people and their elected leader:

“The Biden-Harris Administration claimed that concessions to Maduro’s regime would ensure a ‘free and fair’ electoral process in Venezuela, but we all know that was a farce. The ‘strategies’ of this administration have only empowered Maduro and his cronies.

“It is shameful that the Biden-Harris Administration is unwilling to declare victory for President-elect Edmundo González while the regime doubles down on its repressive scheme.

“Any negotiation is a continuous lifeline for the narco-regime. The tenacity of the Venezuelan people was evident when they proudly went out to vote and peacefully demonstrated their desire to be free. The message from the U.S. must be clear: we stand for freedom, recognize Edmundo González as president-elect, and acknowledge that Maduro’s illegitimate mandate must come to an end.”

Further information on related statements by Senator Rubio can be found in previous releases dating back to December 2023.
