U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV) have introduced the United States-Jordan Defense Cooperation Act to further U.S. interests in the Middle East.
“It’s imperative we continue to assist partners who support U.S. interests in the Middle East. Strengthening our defense operations in the Middle East will not only benefit the region but also our national security interests,” stated Senator Rubio.
Senator Rosen emphasized, “The U.S.-Jordan partnership is a pillar of stability in the Middle East. Jordan shares many interests with the United States, from combating violent extremism to defending against Iran’s aggression. I’m proud to help introduce this bipartisan legislation to bolster our defense cooperation with Jordan, protect the region from Iranian air and missile threats, and enhance America’s national security interests.”
The bill includes several key provisions:
- It designates Jordan for three years as eligible for streamlined defense sales, licensing agreements, and technical assistance under the Arms Export Control Act.
- It authorizes the U.S. Secretary of Defense, in coordination with the U.S. Secretary of State and Office of the Director of National Intelligence, to establish a program enhancing U.S.-Jordanian cooperation in counter-UAS and counter-missile operations.
- It allows the Department of State to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with Jordan aimed at increasing military cooperation through joint exercises, personnel exchanges, support for international peacekeeping missions, and enhanced strategic dialogue.
- It expresses Congress's view that expedited consideration of certifications for letters offering defense articles, services, design and construction services, and major defense equipment sales to Jordan aligns with U.S. security and foreign policy goals.
