WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Rick Scott, known for his support of Taiwan, today expressed his endorsement for the inauguration of Taiwan’s new democratically-elected government and President Lai Ching-te. In 2022, Senator Scott visited Taiwan to meet with then-President Tsai Ing-Wen and other senior officials. The discussions revolved around the significance of a robust U.S.-Taiwan relationship in terms of trade, defense, and national security policies.
Senator Rick Scott stated, “It is no secret that Taiwan has a formidable enemy in Communist China’s evil dictator, Xi Jinping, who is willing to invade Taiwan and continue his attacks against democracy in a quest for world domination. Taiwan needs American support now more than ever and today is a bright day in Taiwan as it makes history with another peaceful installation of a democratically-elected government. I’d like to congratulate President Lai Ching-te and look forward to working together as we continue to strengthen the U.S.-Taiwan relationship.”
Senator Scott is spearheading several bills in the United States Senate to bolster Taiwan amid Communist China’s escalating aggression. These include the Deterring Communist Chinese Aggression Against Taiwan Through Financial Sanctions Act which would impose severe financial sanctions on the Chinese government if Communist China invaded or blockaded Taiwan or attempted to alter the status of Taiwan’s governance through force. He also proposed the Taiwan Invasion Prevention Act which fortifies the U.S.-Taiwan relationship and enhances Taiwan’s capacity to resist Communist China’s aggressive policies and military actions. Additionally, he co-sponsors the bipartisan Transpacific Allies Investing in Weapons to Advance National (TAIWAN) Security Act which mandates the Secretary of Defense to augment defense industrial base cooperation between the U.S. and Taiwan with an aim to deepen U.S.-Taiwan defense ties, ensure supply chain security, and help address Taiwan’s readiness challenges.
