U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott have expressed strong disapproval of China's recent decision to end foreign adoptions. The announcement affects around 300 American families, including those from Florida, who have been matched with Chinese children.
In their joint statement, the senators said, "Under Xi Jinping’s authoritarian regime, China has stopped allowing foreign adoptions. This decision has created significant challenges for many American families, including those in our home state of Florida, who are left in limbo after being matched with their adoptive children. These are selfless American families who seek to provide loving homes for Chinese American adoptees, including many with medical needs. We urge the Chinese regime to reconsider its position and allow these families to unite with their adoptive children once and for all."
This situation is reminiscent of a similar stance taken by Rubio in December 2012 when he urged the Obama Administration to condemn Russia's adoption ban.
The issue of international adoption remains a concern for the senators, as seen in July 2024 when Rubio, Scott, and Dunn called on the Biden Administration to expedite Haitian adoption cases.
