WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Senator Rick Scott and Senator Roger Marshall have put forward the Demanding Citizenship in D.C. Elections Act, aiming to combat the issue of illegal aliens participating in elections within the District of Columbia. The legislation seeks to mandate that only U.S. citizens can vote in municipal elections in D.C., requiring proof of citizenship.

The initiative comes as a response to a recent federal court decision that dismissed a challenge against the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022, which permits noncitizens to vote in D.C. Senator Scott highlighted the significance of the bill, stating, “It is unacceptable for anyone who is not a United States citizen to vote in any election, and the Democrat-run District of Columbia is no exception.”

Senator Marshall echoed these sentiments, criticizing the Biden administration's handling of border security and emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the integrity of American elections. He emphasized the need to push back against efforts to manipulate the electoral process, stating, “Our Democracy as we know it is under attack by this administration, and while this legislation is a great first step, much more needs to be done.”

The introduction of this legislation underscores the ongoing debate surrounding voting rights and election integrity in Washington, D.C., a unique jurisdiction under the authority of Congress. With concerns over potential election interference and the inclusion of noncitizens in the voting process, the bill aims to uphold the principles of free and fair elections that accurately represent the will of American citizens.
