U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Ben Cardin (D-MD), and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) have jointly issued a statement expressing serious concerns about the situation in Venezuela. The Senators highlighted the repressive actions of the Maduro regime against the leading opposition leader, María Corina Machado, ahead of the presidential elections.
In their statement, the Senators emphasized, "The Maduro regime has disregarded the Barbados Agreement and shown the world it will stop at nothing to undermine its opponent, María Corina Machado." They further stated, "Any attack against Machado’s integrity, including arbitrary arrests, must be met with an international response."
The Senators also raised alarm about the upcoming elections in Venezuela, stating, "Let there be no doubt, the upcoming elections will not be free, fair, nor democratic." They called on the Biden Administration and the international community to hold Maduro accountable for his actions. The recent passing of Venezuela’s anti-fascism law was cited as evidence of the regime's crackdown on civil society, political opposition, and freedom of the press.
The joint statement called for the United States to uphold the parameters set out in the Barbados Agreement and consider imposing individual sanctions on those directly responsible for repressive actions in Venezuela. The Senators urged swift action from the United States and the international community to hold the Maduro regime accountable as it seeks to maintain its grip on power.
The bipartisan statement reflects ongoing concerns about the situation in Venezuela and the need for a strong response to protect democracy and human rights in the country.
