The Senate has approved the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary of National Significance Act, a bill introduced by U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, which aims to designate the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program (PPBEP) as an “Estuary of National Significance” under the National Estuary Program. Senator Rubio expressed his hope for the House to promptly pass the bill, stating, “Enrolling the PPBEP in the National Estuary Program will provide critical support for restoration, conservation, and monitoring efforts in Pensacola and Perdido Bays and enhance economic activity in the Florida Panhandle.”

Senator Scott also praised the Senate's unanimous approval of the bill, emphasizing its importance in protecting Florida's environment. He stated, “The Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary of National Significance Act will take important steps in our fight to protect and preserve Florida’s environment and natural resources.”

The Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program expressed gratitude for the leadership of Senators Rubio and Scott in pushing for the designation. Executive Director Matt Posner highlighted the significance of the bill, saying, “Designation as a National Estuary Program provides a transformational opportunity to invest in the restoration and conservation of our estuaries and watersheds for generations to come.”

Chairman Mike Kohler of the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program Board of Directors also commended the Senators for their efforts, stating, “We look forward to the bill clearing the House and being signed into law so the Estuary Program can continue to execute on its critical mission.”

This legislation marks a significant step towards protecting and preserving the natural resources of the Pensacola and Perdido Bays, with bipartisan support in the Senate and optimistic prospects for passage in the House.
