U.S. Senator Marco Rubio has urged Guatemala to resist Beijing's bullying tactics and maintain its friendship with Taiwan in the face of increasing pressure from China. Rubio's comments come at a critical time when Guatemala is considering developing formal trade ties with China, potentially jeopardizing its longstanding relationship with Taiwan.

Rubio emphasized Guatemala's unique position as the most populous country in the world to formally recognize Taiwan, highlighting the importance of standing firm against Chinese coercion. He warned that China would likely condition trade relations on Guatemala's denial of Taiwan's legitimacy, urging Guatemalan leaders to resist such pressure.

President Arévalo's recent reaffirmation of Guatemala's friendship with Taiwan was commended by Rubio, who cautioned against succumbing to China's ongoing and escalating pressure. He advised President Arévalo and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña to wisely withstand any temptations to prioritize economic ties with China over their principles.

Rubio pointed out the diminishing returns of economic relations with China, citing a significant decrease in Chinese investment in the Western Hemisphere since 2019. He also highlighted numerous unfinished or uninitiated projects involving Chinese firms, casting doubt on the benefits of deepening ties with Beijing.

In conclusion, Rubio urged Guatemalans to recognize that yielding to China's pressure would signify submission to Beijing and compromise their sovereignty. By steadfastly supporting Taiwan, Guatemala can uphold its dignity and autonomy while pushing back against China's authoritarian practices and human rights violations.
