Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has called on President Joe Biden to address the increasing number of attacks on Catholic churches in the United States. Rubio highlighted that since May 2020, there have been over 400 attacks on Catholic churches across the country.
Rubio's letter to President Biden emphasized the urgency of investigating and fully prosecuting these incidents. He stated, "As president, you have the constitutional duty to 'take care that the laws be faithfully executed.' The top priority of your administration should be to protect and defend any group from violence."
The senator pointed out the concerning trend of attacks on Catholic churches, especially in states like Florida, where a significant number of these crimes occur. Rubio expressed his concern over the lack of action from the administration, leading to doubts among faith communities about the government's commitment to safeguarding the Catholic Church and its members.
The attacks on Catholic churches have been a persistent issue, with Rubio noting that they escalated following certain events, stating, "143 attacks occurred in 2022. These attacks also continued in 2023, with more than 100 attacks occurring last year."
Rubio's letter to President Biden serves as a plea to prioritize the protection of U.S. Catholic churches and their congregants in the face of ongoing threats and violence.
