Yesterday, Venezuelans, both in their home country and in exile, voted to choose their presidential candidate in the primaries ahead of the 2024 elections.
In response to this important event, Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Tim Kaine (D-VA), the Ranking Member and Chairman, respectively, of the Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women's Issues, issued the following statement:
"Yesterday, Venezuelans from around the world made their voices heard during the opposition primaries. We congratulate María Corina Machado on her victory and commend the tremendous effort of the Venezuelan people to make yesterday's elections a reality, despite many challenges. Once again, the world has witnessed the courage of the Venezuelan people who voted under current scrutiny and pressures.
"This democratic resistance effort has made it clear that Venezuelans, from all social classes and both inside and outside their homeland, want a change for their future. We call on the United States and the international community to help ensure that next year's general elections are held freely, including the participation of international observers, and for the regime to release all political prisoners."
The senators' statement acknowledges the determination of the Venezuelan people to exercise their democratic rights and urges international support for future elections. It highlights the importance of free and fair elections, with the participation of international observers, as well as the release of political prisoners.
The involvement of Senators Rubio and Kaine, who hold key positions in the Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, underscores the significance of the Venezuelan elections and the international community's attention to the situation in the country.
As the political landscape in Venezuela continues to evolve, these statements from prominent U.S. senators serve as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for democracy and the importance of international support in ensuring a transparent electoral process.
The road to the 2024 elections in Venezuela may be challenging, but with the determination of the Venezuelan people and the support of the international community, there is hope for a brighter future for the country.
