U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) joined Special Report with Bret Baier to discuss the impending government shutdown, the possibility of a Saudi-Israeli normalization deal, and the indictment of Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ). In the interview, Rubio addressed the Senate's short-term spending bill and the need for both chambers to pass a solution to prevent a shutdown.
Rubio stated, "I’m realistic about the fact that whatever we pass here still has to be consulted with the House. The only way to pass something around here is to get both chambers to pass it. I’m not going to get involved in the House’s business.… The last thing they need or want is senators telling them what they need to be doing. Suffice it to say that you know what we pass here is probably not going to be what the House can pass, at least under the current outlines."
Expressing his dislike for shutdowns, Rubio emphasized the importance of passing appropriations bills to avoid such situations. He acknowledged that while there was time to do more in the House and Senate, it got caught up for some reasons. He mentioned that the House is currently attempting to pass appropriations bills but noted that it wouldn't happen by Saturday night in time to prevent a shutdown. Rubio concluded, "So something’s going to have to happen to keep the lights on."
When asked about the House's requests, Rubio explained that there are several things he would like to see done and proposals from House members that he supports. However, he highlighted that Democrats currently control the Senate, emphasizing the significance of elections. Rubio pointed out issues like the situation at the border, stating that it is a self-inflicted wound and expressed concerns about the lack of meaningful action from the current administration.
Regarding a potential Saudi-Israeli normalization deal, Rubio expressed optimism, stating, "I do [think a deal is possible], and I hope it happens. It would be an important moment for the region and ultimately for the world." He highlighted the deep concerns both Israel and Saudi Arabia have about Iran and the need to work through impediments to achieve a deal.
On the topic of Senator Menendez's indictment, Rubio recognized the disturbing allegations made against Menendez and the seriousness of the evidence. However, he stressed that guilt is proven in front of a jury, and the government has to make its case. Rubio cautioned against setting a standard that automatically requires resignation based solely on an indictment and emphasized the importance of due process.
