Edward Waters College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
Edward Waters dominated the second half of their exhibition contest against Jacksonville University at Swisher Gymnasium on Monday night, and even had a slight lead with 3:38 remaining in the contest. The upset bid for the Lady Tigers turned out not to be as the Division I Dolphins escaped with a 69-64 win.
The Lady Tigers (4-0* Game Did Not Count Against Record) fell in an early hole, down seven points with 6:54 remaining in the first quarter. EWU got off of the mat, rattling off a 17-9 run to close out the quarter with an 18-16 first quarter lead.
Jacksonville (2-0), who days earlier picked up their first win road win over a Big 10 team by defeating Minnesota, owned the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Tigers, 26-13 to take a 42-31 halftime lead.
The third quarter saw Edward Waters chip into the lead, cutting it down to as little as five points and ultimately trailing 53-47 going into the fourth quarter.
The penultimate quarter saw the visitors from Kings Road show the ultimate resolve in quickly evaporating the Dolphins lead, tying the contest at 54-54 midway through the fourth. EWU took their first lead since the end of the first quarter, when La'Quanza Glover hit the first of free throw trip, leading 57-56 with 5:27 remaining. Fast forwarding to the 3:38 mark of the quarter, Edward Waters led by two on an Emari Bell layup to lead 60-58. Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, JU went on an 11-4 run over the remaining 3:38 to thwart the Lady Tigers' upset bid.
Edward Waters pressed the Dolphins all night long, forcing 19 JU turnovers that turned into 18 points for the Lady Tigers. Conversely, EWU turned the ball over 24 times in the contest themselves, including critical turnovers in the late stages of the fourth quarter.
Jacksonville slightly outshot Edward Waters 42.9% to 35.6% and owned the paint, outscoring the Lady Tigers 44-26. For Edward Waters, they took care of business on the glass, outrebounding JU 44-40, including a 19-14 edge on the offensive boards.
In tight contests like these, free throws become much more magnified. Edward Waters had their opportunites to force the issue at the charity stripe, but shot 17-29 from the line, and had some major missed opportunities at the line in the fourth.
Four Lady Tigers were in double figures in the contest, led by Glover with another double-double effort, posting game highs in scoring with 18 points, and rebounds with 21. Teiyahna Hutchinson finished with 11 points, while both Molly Ragle and Emari Bell had 10 points apiece for the Purple & Orange.
EWU will return home on Wednesday evening at 6:00pm against NCAA Division II member Georgia College at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex.
