Edward Waters College Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 7.
A four and a half hour weather delay and a venue change proved to be too much for Edward Waters as the Tigers struggled to find their footing offensively and fell 24-0 to Savannah State on Saturday evening.
The contest between the two squads was originally scheduled for 5:00pm at Theodore A. "Ted" Wright Stadium in Savannah, but torrential thunderstorms ultimately made the playing surface unplayable, forcing a change to Memorial Stadium.
The Edward Waters offense was stymied throughout the contest, posting just 109 yards of total offense (37 passing, 72 rushing). Savannah State had 367 yards (306 rushing, 61 passing).
The Tigers did win the turnover battle in the contest, forcing nine fumbles and recovering three.
Quarterback David Johnson was held to just 37 yards on 6-of-21 passing and was sacked seven times. Senior RB Maliek Stephens was the Tigers lone shining light offensively, finishing with 92 yards rushing on 21 carries.
Defensively, junior DE Jaren Wilson had 13 total tackles, including six tackles for loss, one sack, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries for EWU.
Edward Waters will conclude the 2021 campaign on Saturday, November 13th as the Purple & Orange will take part in the 2nd Annual AME Football Classic against Allen University. Kickoff from Columbia, South Carolina is set for 1:00pm.
