Edward Waters College Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 8.
The 2021-22 home opener turned out to be a success for the Edward Waters women's basketball squad as the Lady Tigers earned a 73-53 victory over Clinton College, Monday morning at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
In a game normally dubbed "Make It A Kid's Day" where area youth are invited to watch the early season contest, the COVID-19 global pandemic forced a change this year as EWU Faculty, Staff, and Students were encouraged to come out and support the Lady Tigers.
Edward Waters (3-0) came out of the blocks slowly in the first half, shooting just 23% from the floor and falling down 7-4 with 4:40 remaining in the first quarter. The Lady Tigers were able to ulimately get off of the mat and close the quarter on a 4-0 run to take an 8-7 lead at the end of one.
The second quarter proved ot be much kinder to the Purple & Orange as EWU shot 50% from the field to and pushed their lead out to 10 points at 34-24 at the half.
Clinton (4-1) cut the deficit down to six midway through the third quarter, but another Lady Tiger run pushed their lead out to 11 at the end of the quarter at 48-37.
EWU saved the best for last, pushing their lead out to as much as 27 points in the fourth quarter on 64% shooting, and sent the home faithful out happy with a 20 point victory and keeping their unblemished mark in tact.
Edward Waters finished Monday's action shooting 41.7% from the floor, while their opponents shot 27%. The Lady Tigers did have their struggles from behind the arc, finishing 1-for-17 from three-point range. Turnovers were slightly problematic for EWU as the Lady Tigers had 21 turnovers that turned into 17 Golden Bear points. Per usual however, EWU's defense carried the day, scoring 20 points off of 25 Clinton College turnovers.
EWU's imposing size was a factor in the contest as well, scoring 50 points in the paint to just 28 for Clinton.
Senior La'Quanza Glover led all scorers in the contest with 18 points and nine rebounds. Senior point guard Sha'Kawanza Brown finished with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting and five rebounds. Junior center Emari Bell had 14 points and six boards, and reserve freshman guard Camryn Siemer had 11 points for the Lady Tigers.
Edward Waters will next travel to Daytona Beach for their yearly exhibition contest against Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday, November 10th. Tip-off from Historic Moore Gymnasium is set for 6:00pm.
