UNF students assisting Northeast Florida Afghan Response Task Force

Unf

University of North Florida issued the following announcement on Oct. 8.

The University of North Florida's Hicks Honors College, more than 60 UNF students and other volunteers will work with the Northeast Florida Afghan Response Task Force to assist immigration lawyers helping Jacksonville residents who are trying to bring family members to safety in the United States. The clinic will take place Saturday, Oct. 9, and Sunday, Oct. 10, at UNF’s Skinner Jones Hall, Building 4, Rooms 1703/1704/1705/1706.

The task force will offer free advice and local attorneys will help participants complete humanitarian parole petitions for fast and effective ways to help family members who are evacuating Afghanistan to look for safety in Jacksonville.

UNF students will greet local Afghani families and make them feel welcome in addition to assisting the lawyers. Students will learn about the humanitarian parole process and how the families are vetted and resettled as part of this experiential service opportunity.

This event is supported by the UNF Hicks Honors College, Department of Diversity Initiatives, International Center, Department of History, Pre-Law Program, Department of Political Science and Public Administration, and the Taylor Leadership Institute.

If you have family or friends trying to get into the U.S. from Afghanistan, you must email the task force at help@nefl-artf.org before going to the clinic for legal service. If you want to help the task force the weekend of the clinic, email volunteer@nefl-artf.org. If you want to donate to help Afghans cover the filing fees, which is $575 per petition, email donate@nefl-artf.org.
