University of North Florida Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 21.
Freshman Seth Martinez has been awarded the ASUN Freshman of the Week honor after his debut collegiate race this past week. He finished at the FSU XC Open in Tallahassee, Fla. with a time of 25:46.0 in his first 8k race at UNF.
"Seth [Martinez] is transitioning very well to college life and the 8k distance running," head coach Jeff Pigg said about the freshman. "He works hard and I think he has a very bright future here."
This is the fifth all-time freshman of the week honor given to the Ospreys for cross country. The last one was given out last season, when Jake Turner won the honor the week of Jan. 26, 2021, and then again on the week of Feb. 9, 2021.
The Ruskin, Fla. native placed 73rd overall out of 254 runners that finished in the FSU XC Open and was the top freshman runner on his team. He helped the Ospreys finish the meet with a seventh-place finish over teams such as Auburn and Clemson, as well as ASUN-opponent FGCU.
Martinez will look to top his debut 8k time from Tallahassee at the cross country team's next meet at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Mo. on Friday, Oct. 1.
