Please help us stop recycle bin contamination!

K

City of Atlantic Beach issued the following announcement on July 29.

From Beaches Go Green, our partner in environmental education and action:

Have you seen the public recycle bins at Beaches Town Center? It took years and a grant from Keep America Beautiful to get them in place. We are grateful to have them in our community!

Unfortunately, the contamination rate in the bins is HIGH. (Check out this video!) The stickers on the cans clearly say EMPTY CANS & BOTTLES ONLY. Sadly, we are seeing lots of dog waste, food waste, ice cream & coffee cups & other trash in these bins. So… many of the EMPTY CANS & BOTTLES that are collected are being sent to the landfill due to waste contamination.

As for recycling, we are NOT suggesting that recycling is the answer to saving the planet. We support producer responsibility too! We know that recycling is only a small part of a bigger solution of USING LESS to protect our planet! We need to educate our community on THINKING REUSABLE & CHOOSING SUSTAINABLE OPTIONS.

Changing our habits is the ONLY way to make a difference!
