The city has announced plans to reinvest nearly $8 million into projects benefiting the University of North Florida (UNF) and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD). This initiative aims to support both emergency services and educational infrastructure.

A total of $4 million is allocated for renovating two fire stations. Fire Station #45, located at 15725 Sawpit Road, was originally a volunteer station and requires updates to accommodate full-time firefighters. Meanwhile, Fire Station #54 at 4220 Jones Road will be remodeled to house a tanker permanently assigned there, which affects the city's ISO rating that influences insurance rates.

An additional $692,823 will fund the construction of a personal protective equipment (PPE) wash facility at 2610 Fairfax Street. This facility will adhere to National Fire Protection Association standards by providing washing and inspection services for firefighter PPE. It will also store extra PPE for rapid deployment during emergencies.

The UNF project involves a $3 million investment in an Esports Arena within the John A. Delaney Student Union. The arena is expected to attract students interested in STEM careers, host national competitions, boost university enrollment, and contribute to local economic development by preparing a workforce skilled in future industries.

Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan stated: “We continue to make investments that create the greatest return for our citizens and these projects are no exception.” She emphasized that the renovations would provide necessary resources for firefighters while maintaining safety standards and insurance rates. Additionally, she highlighted that UNF’s esports arena would help develop a skilled workforce and establish Jacksonville as a leader in this rapidly growing sports genre.
